Globally, it is estimated that 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone some form of female genital mutilation (FGM).

Although FGM is declining in the majority of countries where it is prevalent, most of these are also experiencing a high rate of population growth. This means that the number of girls who undergo FGM will continue to grow if efforts are not significantly scaled up.

According to Mette Strandlod External Relations Associate of UNFPA, inside the UN City Copenhagen, “47, 700 girls under 18 are being married every day and 3 million women suffer from genital mutilation every year.” Mette explained that child marriage and genital mutilation are closed related because both are human rights violations and harmful tradition practices.
