On March 13, the WFP executive director, Ertharin Cousin, requested international aid to elude hunger in Yemen, where the threat of severe food insecurity is growing. After having recently visited Yemen, Cousin referred to the current circumstances as “heartbreaking”.
The WFP helped a record number of 4.9 million hungry people in Yemen after having to overcome significant access obstacles, according to the UN ReliefWeb website.
A world of plenty, wasted
“We live in a world of plenty, so how can we accept that there still be hunger causing deaths?” said UN City Global Issues Communications Officer Anne Poulsen.
Poulsen stressed the fact that 1 in 9 people go to sleep hungry every night yet approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food gets wasted per year, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
