Copenhagen based activist Zainab al-Khawaja speaks at film debut

Following a debut screening of “We Are the Giant”, a documentary about activism in the 2011 Bahraini Arab Spring, Copenhagen based Bahraini activist Zainab al-Khawaja addressed an intimate crowd in her first public event since her release from a Bahrain prison in June 2016.

“One of the reasons that me and my baby got out of a prison cell is because of people in Denmark and other countries working on our cases and standing out in the streets telling people that this is happening,” al-Khawaja said.

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) organized the March 17 film screening and discussion forum at Københavns Hovedbibliotek to inform attendees about the current political climate in Bahrain.

Al-Khawaja’s father and famed activist Abdulhadi al-Khawaja – a Danish citizen – remains in Bahraini prison under a life sentence for his role in anti-government protests.
