Copenhagen, the city of thrift shopping

The streets of Copenhagen are full of people riding bicycles and dressed very stylish. This is mainly due to the secondhand shops. Secondhand shopping is very common and well developed compared to other capitals. Meeting some of the customers and owners helps us to understand why it is so successful in the capital.

Sasha is a Danish woman who owns a secondhand, vintage store. She says that the main advantage of buying vintage is that the quality is better and it’s obviously more sustainable. A disadvantage of buying vintage is the lack of different sizes. Vintage clothes are mostly in small sizes, which makes it difficult for some people. According to her, Danes are very keen on thrift shopping because they really want to get a good deal.

Lippa is a Swedish tourist in Copenhagen. She regularly goes to secondhand shops to buy clothes to wear every day. She does it mainly to find unique clothes, but also for sustainability reasons. She says: “The flea market in Sweden is growing because it’s trendy, but it’s not as developed as it is in Copenhagen.

Jakob is from Copenhagen and often shops at second-hand shops. His reasons are sustainability and saving money. He thinks that thrift shopping is very popular in Denmark because it often comes and goes with trends.

Kamila from Norway has been thrift shopping for a long time. She does it because she wants to save the environment and her money. Even though she sometimes has trouble finding her size, thrift shopping was one of the reasons why she came to Copenhagen.
