Wednesday Greta Thunberg and five members of the pro-Palestinian organization Students Against the Occupation was arrested after blocking the entrance to a university building in Copenhagen.
The organization was established in 2021, but after the escalation in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in October, the members have increased. Greta Thunberg, who is involved in Encampment SU in Stockholm, is one of the people who have also gotten involved in the Copenhagen organization.
They are pushing for the academic boycott and want the University of Copenhagen to boycott research and exchange collaborations with Israeli universities and research institutions that are involved in stuff that does not apply to UN laws.
That is the background for what happened earlier this week. Several members of the organization blocked the Museum Building at the university Wednesday. Six protesters were arrested, one of them was Thunberg.
What led to the arrest is not known.
A witness at the scene of the protest was staying at the hotel on the other side of the road, and saw the protest unfold.
– First we heard a lot of shouting and protesting, and there was some flags and banners coming out of the building. There was a lot of police milling around, and then my husband said he saw the police arresting some people, she explains.
We have been in contact with Kristian Malling Granov, senior communication advisor at the University of Copenhagen, who writes to us that they do not have the possibility to comment the protest nor the protesters demands at this moment.
