The municipality of Malmö expresses concerns that the docks in the southern part of the city center are underdeveloped. Therefore, it is giving contracts to private companies to improve the area. Both under and on top of the water.
The aim of the project is very much to make the city more appealing. The now run down concrete will turn into social spaces, like outdoor theatres and restaurants. The city council felt that the docks of Malmö have fallen behind Copenhagen, and therefore decided to plan a refurbishing.

However, another positive aspect of the project is that marine life will thrive in the shallower water. The work of restoring the water levels is done, it was necessary for the upcoming development. Both for safety and to increase water quality.
New sand will make the seabed flourish. Newly established mussels and algae can now improve biodiversity and clean the water from waste. This might lead to more swans in the future.
